It all depends on you. First, you have to understand what the particular types of load will do to your target at certain ranges.
Birdshot, which can contain about 100-250 ant sized pellets, have a spread of about 10 inches at ten feet. Although you're more likely to hit your target, not much damage is done unless most of the pellets reach the target.
Buckshot, which contains about 10-20 pea sized pellets, is more devastating, and can go through thicker materials, but can get innaccurate at a lower range than birdshot. The spread is similar to that of birdshot.
Finally, we have the slug. This behemoth is essentially a big a** hunk of lead, but, to do ANY damage at all, you have to be accurate enough to hit your target at about 95% accuracy, as there is no spread, being a single projectile. These have been known to be able to go through car doors without losing much velocity, but like all shotgun loads, can be very inaccurate to medium ranges.
Remember when I said it all depends on you, well, you should only shoot these rounds if you are physically capable of doing so without needing a chiropractor.
Birdshot has the least amount of recoil,
Then comes Buckshot,
And finally The Slug, the hardest kicking of all.
(Rule of thumb, the larger the size projectile(s), the harder it will kick.)
Also, never forget that to hit accurately with a slug, you need to shoulder the weapon, which might hurt if you're not strong enough to control the recoil.
Good luck, happy shooting, and god bless the 2nd amendment!

buckshot if no choke,
#4 birdshot with full or extra full choke.
I just went plinking with friends yesterday. We found a house in the desert and shot it up some. We learned alot about shotgun penetration that day, as well as pistol, rifle, and .22lr penetration. many things contradicting what is common knowledge on the net.
#7.5 birdshot with no choke out of a 20 gauge f'd up two walls in a row shooting at 12 feet. so much for "not even about to penetrate drywall". The walls were actually made of cheap 1/4" plywood sheets. that stuff is harder than drywall.
#4 birdshot with a full choke, 12 gauge at 20 yards blew a hole thru one of the exterior walls. clean thru. actually, I aimed up to avoid showing people nearby with bits of wood, so it blasted a whole clean thru the roof too. Bits of wood shingle flew everywhere. If I shot a guy with that, he'll be really really F-d up. as in dead. with a big hole in the chest.

For combat 3 inch magnums loaded with 000 or 00 Buck shot and standard slugs for greater distance. For home defense I suggest standard 2 3/4 inch shells loaded with #4 to #8 bird shot. If you defending yourself or home the police will have less issue with the bird shot. Should it get to a court room it is harder to prosecute and easier to defend.

Best?
If you really want to ruin somebody then surely this Rhodesian 12 gauge jungle ammo would do the job.....http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/p…
Of course at $30 a package its a bit expensive....
Some of this stuff could do lots of damage too......http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/pg31.h…
But if your a regular guy on a regular budget then this 2 3/4 inch 9 pellet double OO buckshot is fine......http://www.wolfammo.com/index.php?option…

i would have to say 4 Buck, 41 .24 caliber round balls coming at you faster than the speed of sound is no small shell. this is one of the most underated self defense load. it gives you spread and power with out over penetrating too much.

4 birdshot, big enough to put the hurt on anything inside of 30 yrds. If you can disintegrate a turkey head with it at 40 yds then you can definitely get the disired result on other targets at 30.

00 Buck
No need for slugs that close.
Birdshot = Fail on humans. Yes it will leave a nasty shallow wound.. but it wont reach the vitals.

It would be hard to walk or fight after getting hit at that range with almost any 12ga round. Birdshot would be easier to explain in court.
