How Is Kadampa Buddhism Different From Other Forms Of Buddhism?

I’ve been warned previously that it is some kind of ‘cult’ in the eyes of Buddhists. How are the practices different in the New Kadampa Tradition than other Buddhist branches? Why would someone say that it is a ‘cult’? I’ve just heard there is controversy surrounding them. There is only a Kadampa temple in my area.
