Pretty things from the mailbox . . .
Try as I might to be inspired by winter street style outfits and fall collections at fashion week all I really can think about is spring right now, in case you can’t tell by the lookbooks I’ve been posting here and all the boater hats and floral sundresses that are crowding up my Tumblr. I’m sorry! I’m just waiting for the day when I’ll be able to actually wear the sort of outfits I’ve been most inspired by. Until then I seem to be making a little stockpile of things to wear once the weather gets nice, mostly sundresses to wear on all those imaginary trips I want to go on.
The little pink one was sent to me by Megan Nielsen, who has an adorable clothing line that will make you wish for spring if nothing else will. When she first showed me the dress I immediately imagined wearing it in hot weather with a straw hat and those tan wedges I have yet to find, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to wait that long to wear it. So it’ll probably be making its outfit post debut soon.
I have the hardest time finding vintage sunglasses that look all right on me, so when I bought this ’60s butterscotch pair on Etsy I almost expected to put them on and decide they weren’t for me after all. But I actually like these! I bought them because they vaguely remind me of Karen Walker sunglasses, which I absolutely love but can’t afford and probably would look silly in.
The blue Permanent Vacation dress was an insomnia-induced impulse buy sometime last week in the wee hours of the morning . . . The sale was going strong and I guess I couldn’t resist, even though I wasn’t sure how the dress would be in person. But I got it yesterday and I really love it and how it’s a little different from the sundresses I normally get–it’s a little big long and loose, and the color and print are very different for me, but maybe in a good way? It’s a perfect dress for spring, and I think that wearing tights with it would be a sacrilege, so until warm weather gets here it’s hanging on my wall.
I also ended up getting the loveliest surprise from Mona, who I met on my trip to Florida. Like the Valentine’s Day package she sent last year, this one is absolutely lovely and left me sort of speechless. It’s all so thoughtful and prettily arranged, from the little floral handkerchief found in a Florida antique shop to the ’50s girl scout pin to the swan hair barrette. I love the little ’30s photo (perfect Spring inspiration, so you can bet I’ll be scanning it in soon) and the ’20s valentines and the old Schrafft’s chocolate box that it all came in. And then there’s the Chanel nail polish . . . I never really talk much about nail polish here, but I’m sort of obsessed with it. Sometimes I even read nail polish blogs, and one of my favorite things to do is paint my nails every Friday when all my work is done. Last week I was looking at magazines at Borders and saw Chanel Particuliere and fell in love with it though never mentioned it to anybody, so I think Mona must be able to read minds, because she sent me a bottle, along with the gorgeous purple, almost-black Vendetta that’s also just the sort of color I want to paint my nails on a Friday evening. It’s my first Chanel anything, and it all really makes me marvel at how nice people can be.
