Portraits of Theda Bara from AliceJapan

Lately I’ve been especially drawn to black and white clothes with a kind of creepy edge, and I think it’s a lot like the Edwardian phase I went through last spring, only this one may be a bit darker.  Silent film inspired for sure, but more vamp than innocent, more Theda Bara than Mary Pickford.  That Lula film Spell is to blame for getting me into witchy silent film vamp style, but I think my weird thing for the Victorian mourning look may have come about from reading books about the Civil War and this one I’m reading right now that goes into the most fascinating, tiny details about American life in the Victorian times.  And, well . . . so far it hasn’t said a thing about clothes, but maybe it’s the whole gloomily romantic Victorian outlook that’s inspiring me most right now, all gothic novels and cemeteries  . . .

Duskin dress . . . headband from Anthropologie . . . .  a look from Charles Anastase’s Spring 2010 collection . . . . a photo from the new Lula (found here!) . . . .  Topshop shoes.
