The latest collaboration in the Melissa Shoes lineage is with none other than Jean Paul Gaultier. Personally, I am not really the plastic stiletto type, but for vegan fashionistas, this adds a whole new dimension to their loftier goals. Available in black, caramel, beige, lime and tangerine, the shoe will be launched in June 2010. Read more on Dazed Digital.

The Hermitage

Photos by Drew

When I wrote that post about imaginary southern travels and how I wanted to see the Hermitage I had no idea I’d be going there so soon.  But on Saturday when we were in Tennessee and the weather magically turned nice, my parents and Drew and I got in the car, picked up Lauren and Neil in Nashville, and drove off to spend the day at the old plantation where Andrew Jackson lived.  Unfortunately I didn’t wear the magical Steven Alan dresses or See by Chloe sandals on my imaginary wishlist; H&M striped dresses and old estate sale scarves aren’t quite as good, but they did the trick for the day.  Plus I actually wore sensible shoes for once and probably enjoyed myself 10 times more because of it . . . it’s amazing to be able to walk around forests or jump across creeks without having to worry about silly platform heels getting in the way.

We actually took the tour this time, and I’m glad we did because with a president like Andrew Jackson there were lots of good stories to fit in . . . And of course the rooms and 19th century wallpapered hallways were too pretty to miss, especially since everything seems to have been left alone since the time of the Jacksons.  We weren’t supposed to take pictures inside, but Drew snuck lots of them, which was good, because since the outside of the building is being restored at the moment we couldn’t get any proper tourist photos out in front.  No white-columned, southern porch photos for us!

It was OK, though.  There was so much to see outside.  There’s the family graveyard, tiny and Victorian and set off by Andrew and Rachel Jacksons’ elaborate tomb; there are wooded trails and streams and a spring that ends in a little stone building that served as an early type of refrigerator; there are beautiful gardens near the house, and not so near it there are slave cabins and cotton fields and other reminders of southern plantation life before the Civil War.  I like that the tour and the short film we saw beforehand didn’t gloss over this part of Jackson’s life and presidency, and they certainly didn’t hero-worship him either.

There was a little headset you could also listen to get more information, but I’m a bad listener and was too busy being goofy with Drew and my family to remember to put my headphones on at every landmark.  Besides, making jokes is probably my favorite part of family outings anyway.

Pretty things from the mailbox . . .

Try as I might to be inspired by winter street style outfits and fall collections at fashion week all I really can think about is spring right now, in case you can’t tell by the lookbooks I’ve been posting here and all the boater hats and floral sundresses that are crowding up my Tumblr.  I’m sorry!  I’m just waiting for the day when I’ll be able to actually wear the sort of outfits I’ve been most inspired by.  Until then I seem to be making a little stockpile of things to wear once the weather gets nice, mostly sundresses to wear on all those imaginary trips I want to go on.

The little pink one was sent to me by Megan Nielsen, who has an adorable clothing line that will make you wish for spring if nothing else will.  When she first showed me the dress I immediately imagined wearing it in hot weather with a straw hat and those tan wedges I have yet to find, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to wait that long to wear it.  So it’ll probably be making its outfit post debut soon.

I have the hardest time finding vintage sunglasses that look all right on me, so when I bought this ’60s butterscotch pair on Etsy I almost expected to put them on and decide they weren’t for me after all.  But I actually like these!  I bought them because they vaguely remind me of Karen Walker sunglasses, which I absolutely love but can’t afford and probably would look silly in.

The blue Permanent Vacation dress was an insomnia-induced impulse buy sometime last week in the wee hours of the morning . . . The sale was going strong and I guess I couldn’t resist, even though I wasn’t sure how the dress would be in person.  But I got it yesterday and I really love it and how it’s a little different from the sundresses I normally get–it’s a little big long and loose, and the color and print are very different for me, but maybe in a good way?  It’s a perfect dress for spring, and I think that wearing tights with it would be a sacrilege, so until warm weather gets here it’s hanging on my wall.

I also ended up getting the loveliest surprise from Mona, who I met on my trip to Florida.  Like the Valentine’s Day package she sent last year, this one is absolutely lovely and left me sort of speechless.  It’s all so thoughtful and prettily arranged, from the little floral handkerchief found in a Florida antique shop to the ’50s girl scout pin to the swan hair barrette.  I love the little ’30s photo (perfect Spring inspiration, so you can bet I’ll be scanning it in soon) and the ’20s valentines and the old Schrafft’s chocolate box that it all came in.  And then there’s the Chanel nail polish . . . I never really talk much about nail polish here, but I’m sort of obsessed with it.  Sometimes I even read nail polish blogs, and one of my favorite things to do is paint my nails every Friday when all my work is done.  Last week I was looking at magazines at Borders and saw Chanel Particuliere and fell in love with it though never mentioned it to anybody, so I think Mona must be able to read minds, because she sent me a bottle, along with the gorgeous purple, almost-black Vendetta that’s also just the sort of color I want to paint my nails on a Friday evening.  It’s my first Chanel anything, and it all really makes me marvel at how nice people can be.

Easily Maintained Hairstyles 2010

Every woman had those days where she wishes she could just get up, shower and go, without taking an hour or five to do something to her hair. This can be remedied, if you find a hairstyle that’s easily maintained.

Try a pixie cut. This style is short, and can be worn messy or straight. Clips can be added to make it more interesting, and something as simple as a part could make it look like you have a brand new hairstyle.
A contemporary cut can also do the trick. That’s a modern cut that’s usually straight, sleek and cut so that it frames your face. You can maintain it with something as simple as a blow dryer and gel. You don’t even need a brush; just gel it down, then blow dry it with a comb. Wrapping it will keep the look flat for up to two weeks.

Soft layers are also easily maintained, with regular trimming, and can be styled any way you like. Another option is to have your hair cut to about medium length, perhaps just shoulder level. It takes a short amount of time to wash and style, and affords versatility for every occasion.

If you are African-American and looking for an easily maintained hairdo, braids are always a popular choice. Braids allow your hair to rest, and some styles – such as tree braids and micro braids – allow your hair to rest and afford you versatility. These styles can last anywhere from six weeks to three months.
